Genuine black copal (Copal negro) originates from Central America, more precisely from Mexico. It looks like a dark coloured frankincense.
 
Black copal is widely used for fumigation in Mexico, like frankincense in Africa and the Middle East. It is a substance favoured by shamans for its magical powers, just like white copal.
 
When burnt on charcoal, it gives off a balsamic and earthy smell, which can be reminiscent of a kind of frankincense. It purifies and protects, and promotes rooting and contact with the dead.
