Sanaag Frankincense from Somalia

This is a lesser known incense resin than Boswellia carterii, which is the most common in Somalia. It has always been harvested but is usually mixed with the carterii incense crops. This is a batch of pure Boswellia occulta, not mixed with other varieties.

Its smell is very different and can be described as bitter, due to the methyl ethers that it alone contains in abundance.

A resin native to the region called Sanaag, in northern Somalia along the Gulf of Aden. Sanaag (or Sanag) is part of Somaliland, a region that claims independence, although this has not been recognised by the international community to date.
