Sudanese Frankincense
This is one of the most common incense resins. Native to Sudan, this frankincense of the genus Boswellia papyrifera produces a less resinous scent when fumigated than the other genera (carterii from Somalia, or sacra from Oman, etc.).
It is very similar to other varieties of the same genus from Ethiopia or Sudan.
This type of grain is small to mediumb and is very convenient for making mixtures with other resins. It is mainly this type of frankincense (together with Ethiopian or Eritrean) that is used for making church incense mixtures.
The Orthodox monks of the monasteries of Mount Athos, a Greek peninsula in the Salonika region, also use this type of resin for the production of the fragrant Mount Athos incense.
